Referrals are important source of traffic for your site, and should be cultivated. GA4 doesn't immediately show those sources however.
To identify referral sources in Google Analytics 4 ( GA4 );
- Access Traffic Acquisition Report
Navigate to the GA4 dashboard and go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition. In the Traffic Acquisition report, scroll down to the table where you'll see information for different traffic sources. - Filter for Referral Traffic ( optional )
At the top of the table, use the search field to filter for "referral" traffic. This will show you the traffic that comes from other websites. Do this if you want to see only referral traffic, without other sources showing. - Viewing Referral Sources:
To see where your referral traffic is coming from, go to "Session default channel group," click the dropdown, and choose "Session source/Medium." This action will display the source and medium for all traffic, including referrals. For instance, you might see entries like WebsiteName/Referral. - Analyzing Specific Referral Sources:
If you want to focus only on referral sources, you can use the search feature to filter for just the referral source. This will show you only the traffic that comes from referrals. - Identifying Top Landing Pages for Referral Traffic:
To see which pages on your site are receiving the most referral traffic, you can adjust the dimensions and metrics in the report to include landing pages.
