You built a great website, and now 2 years later, you need to make a text change site-wide;
- Find and update some old pricing
- Remove all references to a business partner who has moved on
- Remove a special offer that is no longer active
- Remove a specific service mention, or a guarantee
But... it's a big site. How do you even find that content?
Here's how I approach it.
Finding Text
Let's suppose your client is a law firm, and you're looking for all references to "Sharon." Your site's domain is www.lawfirm.com.
Google Search
Although it's no longer 100% reliable, the site: constraint can still produce useful results.
Simply go to Google search and try these searches;
- sharon site:www.lawfirm.com
- sharon site:lawfirm.com
Once you've identified pages that contain this content, you can follow the link and then use your browser's CTRL+F to find that content in-page.
Remember, even once you've removed that text, Google will take some time to re-index the page and update. It may hang around in SERPs for a while.
Webflow Site Search
If you're not already using Webflow's Site Search feature, it's quite handy for finding this content as well.
Enable Webflow's Site Search in your site by dropping a Search element somewhere on an obscure page, temporarily, and then publish. You can remove that element immediately after, search will still be enabled.
It will take 24 hours to index the site, but after that, you can directly visit your Search page at, e.g.;
https://www.lawfirm.com/search
When you're there you'll be able to search for Sharon and see results. Update your site to remove them and republish.
Wait 24 hours, and repeat, until they're all gone.
Important
Remember that in addition to your in-page content, text may also exist...
- In the CMS
- In your page titles, meta descriptions, and custom code
