MailChimp was once king of the hill but for many, the product has lost favor.
Personally Mailchimp has lost favor with me, because of;
- Pricing changes - much more expensive
- UI changes that make the UX difficult for me
- Serious issues migrating customers there with existing customer lists
Notes
MailChimp is incredibly strict on their list import process.
- Expect to spend hours fighting and researching why they're rejecting your customer's lists
- Expect to spend more money and time running your list through a "scrubber" service, and then data extracting "A level" emails that MailChimp is mostly happy to import.
- Expect to lose 50% of your client's list, because MailChimp doesn't like it.
- Expect to spend time in email with support, because your campaigns just stop sending, and your entire account seems to stop working.
- Expect further problems on your first campaign sends, as MailChimp will send out your newsletter in small batches, and occasionally get "stuck", needing attention in order to continue.
When you're first setting up a newsletter service for a client, this is all a huge pain. Many of these problems clearly evolved as a response to abuse issues, and heightened security- but make sure you factor the extra hours into your plan.
