Scripts can do a lot to overcome the limitations of collection lists, but there's a downside to them too;

  • Cost and complexity of development
  • Cost of maintenance, and ongoing client support
  • Slower speed of operation for your site
  • Broken sites, for users who have disabled scripting
  • "Content jumping" as the scripts have to change your content after it loads
  • Potential SEO cost, as layout shifts are penalized
  • Poor user experience, as the page loads and then re-orders itself

Scripts have a place, but make them a last resort, and keep their role as minor as possible.
