The input type indicates the type of data expected, and is a good first-line-of-defense.

It can restrict input to numbers, dates, urls, emails, and more.

Note that the input type can have a huge impact on how different browsers present each input field- which makes styling virtually impossible. However these restrictions are for a good cause- usability.
